Navies
Navies exist as a loud band situated in Washington, DC, 2005. The city is choked, a thick ignorant neck surrounded by a collar of resistance. Imperial fantasy burns down buildings overseas. How do you make your noise audible above the din? Reclaim sonic territory. Press record and take axes to the traditional. Destroy and rebuild faster than they can. Emerge with a vital sound that makes sense to sore ears, if only for a moment. In the marketplace, where sound is sold as nothing but dead weight, act human. Break strings, blisters, and a sweat. Navies are Sean McGuinness, Ed Brant, and Mike Petillo. They played their first show in December 2003. Frequent shows on the East Coast followed, and in April 2004 the band self-released their first two-song 7"/CD on their own label, Foilage. They quickly set out to tour the U.S. in June and July 2004. Navies continued to play up, down, and across the East Coast and Midwest in the fall, and returned to the West Coast again in March 2005 with local friends A Day in Black & White, with whom they shared a split 10" record, released by Level Plane Records to celebrate the tour. The band is influenced by the heavy rhythmic textures of punk/post-punk music. Other points of reference include American and European art- and psych-rock from the 1960s and 1970s, as well as aspects of noise, free music, and dub. |
